Muslim women are never included in art or in fiction or in media as a normality. You won’t see an ad for health insurance with a hijabi woman and her baby. The only time you will see a hijabi on a credit card advertisement if it screams “SHARIA BANKING COMPLIANT.” We are only included in things if our “Muslimness” is a central role in what is trying to be conveyed. We aren’t included in the social fabric of things as a part of normal everyday life.
Think of how many faces you see in the news, billboards, ads, in art, in movies and in every other place you can imagine. When do you see a Muslim woman? Only when her Islamic identity is being discussed. It’s discouraging, and that’s why I am so glad to see Bustygirl comics include Muslim women as a normality, and I would encourage all others who create things like this to follow suit.
And when Muslim women are portrayed in an ad, people demand compensation because it’s being politically correct to put one simple ad featuring a hijabi on TV.

It’s not just muslim women. It’s middle easterns/south asians. Unless the role is specifically “representing” a stereotype about our cultures, we’re not represented in media.
